Principal's Message

Principal's Message February 2013

We have just completed our first semester of the 2012-13 school year.  Our administrative team and staff will now analyze the data from student grades, common finals, gender performance, attendance, discipline, and a variety of other programs.  During this process we will be able to identify successful teaching strategies and target areas that need additional support.     We will also be implementing Common Core tasks to prepare our students for this major change in teaching and learning that will be assessed in the 2014-15 school year.

AN OVERVIEW OF SCHOOL SAFETY AT CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL

Our administrative team and staff clearly understand the importance of creating a safe learning environment for our students.  A safe school is a place where students can learn and teachers can teach in a warm and caring environment free of threats, intimidation, violence and fear.  We are always researching and discussing ways to improve student and staff safety.  We have implemented the following:

  • All staff members are wearing ID badges on campus
  • Students are required to carry their ID cards on campus
  • All visitors need to check in at the front office to obtain a visitor pass and badge
  • Additional video cameras have been installed
  • Additional window coverings are being ordered and installed
  • Emergency phone number rings at the front desk and also in every administrators office
  • Add new interior locking door hardware to older classrooms

The following safety measures have been in place for a number of years:

  1. We enforce zero-tolerance policies toward the presence of weapons, alcohol, and illegal drugs
  2. Fire drills are conducted monthly
  3. Secure campus drills in conjunction with the San Ramon Police department are conducted every semester
  4. Communication systems are tested and adjusted when needed during every drill
  5. A school wide safety plan is updated every year
  6. Staff members train and participate on specific emergency teams
  7. Dress code that prohibits inappropriate clothing that may cause a substantial disruption on campus
  8. Students are required to remain on campus (except for seniors during lunch)
  9. Students must enter and exit through the front office when arriving late or leaving prior to the last bell
  10. A school resource officer, campus monitor and supervisor are present on campus
  11. School counselors and psychologists are available to support students and staff before, during, and after a crisis
  12. A school threat team consisting of a psychologist, counselor, school resource officer and an administrator is activated when needed to prevent a potential threat
  13. Protocols between law enforcement and the school have been developed to share information on at-risk youth
  14. Anti-bullying education is a focal point every year
  15. School messenger system is available to alert parents

All of the above safety measures are assessed each year.  A major key to a safe campus is being able to identify a threat before it happens.  Our students and staff are committed to making sure that California High School is a safe and comfortable place for learning.
