What is CHIME?

Cal High’s Integrated Maker Education (CHIME) is a pilot program that introduces students in the Cal High feeder pattern - from elementary through high school - to Maker Education by integrating hands on learning with the existing curriculum.

What is Maker Education?

Maker Education connects academic learning with real world learning through hands-on projects and problem solving opportunities. Teachers promote interactive, inquiry-based learning to motivate students to be more engaged and better thinkers.

CHIME Objectives

The CHIME pilot is a partnership between SRVUSD administration, Cal High feeder principals, and San Ramon Valley Education Foundation to provide integrated maker education (STEAM) opportunities to elementary, middle school and high school students. The intent of the pilot program is to offer all students access to Maker Education from an early age and throughout their academic career. The pilot will create equitable exposure to encourage higher student participation in the pathways, AP sciences and math, and ultimately careers in STEM.

  • Provide a strong STEAM pathway from elementary to high school in the California High School feeder pattern.
  • Provide opportunities that engage students who traditionally have lower representation in STEM-related careers, including women and underrepresented minorities
  • Increase the number of California High School graduates entering STEM-related careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

What does CHIME look like at my school?

Year one: Elementary

  • Maker education will be integrated into existing elementary curriculum in 3-4 pilot school sites.

Year two: Elementary

  • Maker education will be integrated into existing elementary curriculum in remaining Cal High feeder pattern school sites

Year one: Middle School

  • Maker education will be made available through an expansion of the computer science and tech portions of the wheel in both Iron Horse and Pine Valley middle schools

Year one: High School

  • Open formal Makerspace in library
  • Development of mentoring program for high school students to share what they are learning with K-8 students
